Modi government took these big steps to reduce onion prices, gave so many tons to Turkey

Onion (inflation) inflation is not taking its name. Government company MMTC has given a new contract to import 11 thousand tons of onions from Turkey as part of efforts to curb the rising prices of onions. Sources have given information about this. This is the second contract awarded by MMTC for import of onions. The company has already ordered import of 6,090 tonnes of onions from Egypt. The Union Cabinet has approved importing 1.2 lakh tonnes of onions last month.

After the retail prices of onions have
reached Rs 75 to 120 per kg in different parts of the country, the government has taken several steps, including its imports, to increase its supply. Onion exports have been banned and the maximum limit for onion stocks has been fixed for wholesalers and retailers. According to sources, MMTC has tied up with Turkey for 11 thousand tonnes of onions.

Under this, onion consignment is expected to start from January next year. 6,090 tonnes of onion from Egypt can reach Mumbai's Jawahar Nehru Port Terminal in the second week of this month. A group of ministers has been formed under the leadership of Home Minister Amit Shah to control onion prices. Finance Minister, Consumer Affairs Minister, Agriculture Minister and Road Transport Minister have also been kept in it.

Onion is being sold in the capital of the country at a price four times higher than last year, making it difficult for the common consumers to taste the onion. On 29 November 2018 last year in Delhi's Azadpur Mandi, where the wholesale price of onion was Rs 2.50-16 per kg, there was Rs 20-62.50 per kg.

Onion prices jumped due to lack of supplies

Traders said that onion prices are increasing due to less arrival than consumption. On Friday, the arrival of onion in Azadpur mandi was 1,045.6 tonnes, while the daily consumption of onions in Delhi is around 2,000 tonnes. The government has decided to import 1.2 lakh tonnes of onions to curb the onion inflation.
