Music festival brings world-famous Indian classical artists to Calgary 

CALGARY—A local Indian classical music festival is celebrating its fourth year with a celebration of female artists and some local talent.


The Sarb Akal Indian Classical Music Festival, which is supported by Calgary Arts Development, has grown by leaps and bounds since its first event.

 This year, it has expanded to three days beginning Sept.

12 as well as several workshops in the coming weeks.

And this year, the theme is empowering women, according to executive director Vipul Jasani.

Three of the four headlining artists are internationally known female musicians, highlighting their success in a profession that has historically had more male instrumentalists, he said.

 Vocalist Indrani Mukherjee, violinist Sangeeta Shankar and “Flute Sisters” Debopriya and Suchismita Chatterjee, all internationally known artists, have travelled from India to be a part of the festival.


They are joined by tabla player Subhankar Banerjee, as well as numerous other artists.

This year is also the first time the festival includes Indian classical dance, said Jasani.

The festival doesn’t just celebrate Indian classical music — each year, they also invite a local artist, said Jasani.

Two years ago, they featured an Indigenous artist, and this year Banff harpist Debora Nyack joined the lineup.

The Sarb Akal Music Society of Calgary, which was founded in 2009 by Harjeet Singh, organizes the festival and also provides lessons in traditional Indian classical instruments year-round, such as the sitar, tabla and voice.

Singh started organizing one-off concerts until the first festival in 2016.

However, Jasani said the society wants to organize more events year-round, and they are also working on a series of video interviews with famous artists.

Jasani said the festival is important for Calgarians learning these instruments, because it may be their one chance a year to see Indian classical music performed live at this level.

They also get the chance to meet the artists and to participate in workshops.

This year, the Flute Sisters are offering a workshop on Sunday, Sept. 15.

“We give them a platform to learn and grow and become professional in Indian classical music.” And for music lovers like Jasani, it’s a connection to the sounds of home.


“Our main vision is to keep this tradition of Indian classical music generations to come,” he said.

The festival concerts are Frid, ay, Sept. 13, and Saturday, Sept. 14. 

Workshops are offered on Sept. 15 as well as a three-day classical dance workshop the following weekend.
